Getting Started

Everything You Need

The Fifth Edition System Reference Document. This has everything you need to start your adventure as a Dungeon Master or a player and it’s free! An easy to use wiki can be found here.

D&D Dice Roller
A simple online dice roller that is thoroughly trapped in Web 1.0.

Character Sheets
Official D&D 5e character sheets. Includes a form fillable PDF as well. Also recommended to check out this alternative character sheet that lists the skills under their respective abilities.

…and that’s it! Aside from a group of willing players all you need is the SRD5e and a physical set of 7 polyhedral dice or a virtual dice rolling application to jump into playing. D&D does not have to be an expensive hobby in the slightest, and you can put as much or little money into it as you see fit.

More Than What You Need

Lost Mines of Phandelver
The starter set for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition. Comes with an adventure that takes players to level 5, includes a basic rules booklet, a set of dice, as well as pregenerated characters. Perfect for people new to D&D, players and Dungeon Masters alike.

Cheat Sheets
Print these off for an easy, quick reference guide to a bunch of game mechanics.

Pregenerated Character Sheets
Official pregenerated characters for a variety of class and race combos ranging from level 1 to 10. Jump into playing without the time constraint of rolling a character.

Polyhedral Dice Set
A five pack set of 7 polyhedral dice that are pleasing to the eye. Rolling dice is an essential and satisfying part of any D&D game. Please note: I have not personally used these dice or bought from this company before, but the reviews are solid and it’s hard to go wrong on five sets of dice for less than $10. The large pack o’ dice I initially purchased has been since discontinued. It’s pretty easy to find a decent amount of dice for cheap if these do not suit your taste.

Vinyl Battlemap
An erasable battlemap for your combat needs that comes in big and very big sizes. This is very much worth the money. Grab a pack of wet erase markers too.

Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master
This is it. The holy grail of advice for DMs wanting to run both a high quality game without spending countless hours of preparation each week. Written by Sly Flourish, this guide is the single most valuable information out anything I’ve found and I do not say that lightly. Worth every one of your hard earned pennies at $7.99.

Great series with Matt Colville on why running D&D is fun.

Core Rulebooks

Player’s Handbook
The essential reference book for Dungeons & Dragons for both players and Dungeon Masters. This should be the first book you purchase.

Dungeon Master’s Guide
Everything you need to build a fully realized campaign setting for your table. Optional rules, random tables, and world building advice. This book isn’t necessary to run a game but it definitely helps.

Secondary Rulebooks

Volo’s Guide to Monsters
The “2nd Monster Manual” for Fifth Edition. Contains tons of new creatures as well as variants for creatures already found in the Monster Manual. Also includes new playable races as well as detailed lore on some of Dungeons & Dragons most iconic monsters.

Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
Like an expansion pack for Fifth Edition, this book contains over 20 new subclasses, new spells, and new/expanded rules. Contains a chapter on rolling a character’s background that can help create interesting characters.

Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes
The “3rd Monster Manual” for Fifth Edition. This book mainly focuses on higher level monsters and makes for great inspiration on villains. Also includes lore on Dungeons & Dragons greatest rivalries, including the infernal Blood War and the fall of the drow.
